Three kinds of veneers, three different trade-offs. How long each lasts, how it looks over time, and what to ask before you choose.
If you are thinking about veneers, you will quickly meet three options: composite, porcelain and, more recently, 3D-printed hybrid veneers. Each can change a smile. They differ in how long they last, how they age, and how much of the natural tooth they need.
Composite veneers
Composite is a tooth-coloured resin shaped directly on the tooth, usually in a single visit.
- Completed in one visit.
- Preserve most of the natural tooth structure.
- Can often be repaired without replacing the whole veneer.
- Usually last around five years.
- Stain more easily, and may need regular polishing and maintenance.
- May look less natural and less translucent than porcelain.
Porcelain veneers
Porcelain veneers are thin ceramic shells, designed and made in a dental laboratory and bonded to the front of the teeth.
- Can last 10 to 15 years or longer.
- Highly resistant to staining, and keep their appearance well over time.
- Give the most natural-looking result, with the translucency of real enamel.
- Need more time for design and fabrication.
- May require some permanent preparation of the tooth, although many cases need little or none.
- A chip or fracture may mean replacing the veneer.
3D-printed hybrid veneers
Hybrid veneers are designed digitally and printed in a composite-ceramic material.
- Digital design and fabrication, with a consistent fit when properly made.
- Potentially a faster turnaround than traditional porcelain.
- Sit between composite and porcelain on price.
- Usually expected to last around five to seven years, and may need polishing after a couple of years.
- The finish may be less refined than high-end porcelain, and they may stain more.
So which one is right for you?
It depends on what matters most to you:
- Budget first: composite veneers.
- Long-lasting quality: porcelain veneers.
- A balance of quality and price: 3D-printed hybrid veneers.
The right answer also depends on your own teeth and gums, which is why every plan starts with your photos and a consultation. Send us up to six photos of your smile and Dr. Majd will talk you through the options that suit you.
